Who Watches More Online Video, iPad Users or Android Users?

November 23, 2011

We recently released our first quarterly look at the state of online video. (You may have seen it mentioned on ABC News, TechCrunch or PC Mag.) Among one of the more surprising findings was the margin by which iOS dominated the tablet market in the third quarter.

Together, iOS and Android devices
accounted for more than 90 percent
of the video hours played on tablets and mobile devices. Apple tablets accounted for 99.4
percent of displays, 97.7 percent of
total plays and 95.7 percent of total
 hours streamed.

The iPad has dominated the tablet market since it debuted and accounted for 75% of all tablets sold last quarter. We expected to see more video plays on iPads than Android tablets since there are just more of them out “in the wild.” But we still found these numbers surprising. It seems that iPad owners really love watching video. It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming months with the Kindle Fire. Stay tuned on that front...

We want to stress that the data set we are working with, although vast, does not represent the viewing habits of the Internet at large. Our team analyzed billions of anonymized video analytics pings from millions of individual viewers from over 100 countries—a fairly robust sample—but not the entire Internet by any means.
