PayPal Embarks on a New Frontier: TV Commerce

June 13, 2012

PayPal in the TV space? Yes.

The e-payments company made a big announcement regarding partnerships with Comcast and TiVo at San Francisco's TV of Tomorrow conference, poising itself to be a big player in TV-commerce (nicknamed t-commerce or t-com).

"There’s been a lot of talk about interactive 't-commerce' for a long time, but all signs point to an industry that’s finally on the verge of taking a real foothold in consumers’ lives," Scott Dunlap, PayPal's vice president of emerging opportunities wrote in a blog post. "The online and offline world have merged and commerce now happens anytime and everywhere."

Dunlap, who spoke at TV of Tomorrow said television commerce is one of the biggest focuses at PayPal's emerging opportunities department, which looks at big trends for the next one to three years.

As part of the company's push into the space, it is teaming up with Comcast to "explore opportunities" that let consumers buy products or make donations directly from a remote or second-screen app. The duo will also work on technology that lets viewers accept coupons into their PayPal online wallet during commercials.

The partnership with TiVo focuses on creating interactive ads that let viewers buy products using PayPal when watching live or recorded programming. Consumers can pause the show, complete the transaction and return to the program seamlessly from their TiVo reports.
