Is a Netflix-Cable Partnership On the Horizon?

March 6, 2012

In recent weeks, Netflix has quietly met with cable operators in talks that could add Netflix as an on-demand option for cable subscribers through their set-top boxes, Reuters reported late Tuesday.

Citing four people familiar with these discussions, the potential partnership would be "a major about-face for many in the traditional cable industry who had initially seen Netflix as a threat to their $100 billion-a-year business." In the recent past, Hastings has hinted that Netflix could one day be a cable channel rivaling premium networks such as HBO.

"It's not in the short term, but it's in the natural direction for us in the long term," Reuters quoted Hastings as saying at an investor conference last week.

While a Netflix representative declined to comment, one source said at least one cable operator could offer the streaming service as an add-on by the end of the year.
