Google: Video Ads One of Fastest-Growing Segments in Advertising

June 27, 2012

No company knows digital advertising like Google.

The search giant's Display Business Trends report looks at patterns in advertising. In particular, it said video content monetization is one of the fastest-growing segments in advertising, with publisher online video impressions growing 70 percent in the second half of 2011.

Across in-stream video impressions on the Display Business Trends Video platform, Google found viewers watched video ads to the middle 79 percent of the time and to completion 72 percent -- a trend that suggests people who sit through the first half of an ad are committed viewers. The majority of ads (51 percent) run between 15 to 30 seconds. Thirty-six percent of video ads are longer than 30 seconds, and 13 percent are less than 15 seconds.

The other interesting tidbit is that wide-screen ads (640 x 360) saw a 175 percent increase in impressions, while standard aspect-ratio players appear to be phasing out.

That pretty much sums up the video advertising section of the report. It’s apparent Google will be paying more attention to this growing space. The company says it'll have more comprehensive measures to come.
