Expect More Broadcast Quality Original Online Video in 2012

January 9, 2012

Broadcast-quality original online programming was our top online video trend for 2011 and will certainly impact the media landscape in 2012. Erick Shonfeld has a great post up on TechCrunch that looks at the spate of original online programming currently in the works from Netflix, Hulu and Yahoo.

Tom Hanks is making a cartoon TV series for Yahoo. Steven Van Zandt is starring in a Web-original drama on Netflix. House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, will also appear on Netflix, along with other original shows (it is also resurrecting Arrested Development for the Web audience). Yahoo is partnering with ABC News for Web video, and licensing original comedy as well.

All of this original content does point to an emerging trend, but traditional TV defenders wonder if the scale is large enough to matter. When Mark Cuban was asked about YouTube spending $100 million on new content he just chuckled and said "it's only one hundred million dollars."
