Asian Demand Will Drive 2 Billion Smart Devices by 2016

October 3, 2012

Driven by smartphones and tablet sales, smart device shipments are expected to grow 14 percent annually and surpass 2 billion by 2016.

Research from IDC found connected devices, which includes PCs, smartphones and tablets, reached 276.3 million shipments in the second quarter, a 27.4 percent increase from the year earlier period and 2.8 percent rise from Q1. In total, these shipments totaled $131.5 billion worldwide, a 16.3 percent jump from the year prior.

Notably, in the U.S., connected devices on a whole saw shipment and revenue declines, both on a year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter basis. U.S. shipments in the second quarter totaled 47.4 million, down 5 percent annually and 7.8 percent from the previous quarter. Revenue slipped to $24.8 billion, a 8.6 and 10.3 percent drop annually and quarterly, respectively. IDC attributes this to the overall macroeconomic conditions and high saturation of devices slowing sales.

It's expected smart devices will reach 1.2 billion by 2012 and grow to 1.4 billion by 2013. By 2016, IDC says more than 2 billion units will ship, with the Asia-Pacific market leading with 860 million alone.
