56% of Connected TV Owners Have Hooked Their Sets to the Internet

August 3, 2012

We've pointed out this running trend of people buying fancy new smart TVs and never actually connecting these sets to the Internet before. (C'mon people, it's just an ethernet cord). But Parks Associates has issued a report that finds more people are finally taking advantage of their hardware's Web capabilities.

A bit over half (56 percent) of smart TV owners have connected their devices to the Internet, up from 40 percent in 2010. They're also spending more time watching movies on demand and TV shows online. Now, 75 percent of connected TV owners watch movies on demand at least monthly, a rise from 57 percent in 2011, and 30 percent said they watched them on a near daily basis. Seventy-one percent watch TV shows online at least once a month, an increase from 51 percent in 2011, and 32 percent watch TV shows close to everyday.

“Smart TVs have the potential to be both a threat and an opportunity for pay-TV providers,” says Brett Sappington, research director for Parks Associates, reported BBP Magazine

“However, by integrating the smart TV into their distribution model, pay-TV providers can leverage their strengths in content costs, customer relationships, bundling and other areas to play a more substantial role in OTT."

Sappington also noted that pay TV providers can also use connected TV's household penetration — expected to reach more than 45 percent this year — to lower subscriber costs.
